Iowa has a notable history of African American legislators who have contributed significantly to the state's political landscape.

James H. Jackson became the first African American man elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1964. That same year, Willie Stevenson Glanton was elected to the Iowa House, becoming the first African American woman to serve in that body.

Thomas Mann was elected in 1983 and holds the distinction of being the first African American to serve in the Iowa State Senate.

Ako Abdul-Samad is among the longest-serving African American legislators in Iowa's history. He is currently serving his fifth term in the Iowa House of Representatives and is the founder and senior executive officer of Creative Visions Human Development Institute.

Other notable African American legislators in Iowa include June Franklin, who served in the Iowa House from 1967 to 1973 and was instrumental in passing Iowa's Fair Housing Practices Law in 1967. Wayne Ford was known for his advocacy on behalf of underrepresented communities and served in the Iowa House while founding the nonprofit organization Urban Dreams. Deborah Berry served in the Iowa House and was recognized for her work on social justice issues. Ruth Ann Gaines is a current member of the Iowa House and has been a strong advocate for education and civil rights. Eddie Andrews was elected to the Iowa House and has focused on issues such as technology and community development. Jerome Amos Jr. is currently serving in the Iowa House and has been involved in various community initiatives.

Izaah Knox is the second African American elected to the Iowa State Senate, following Thomas Mann’s tenure. He represents the 17th District and has a background in community leadership, including his role as executive director of Urban Dreams.

The Iowa Legislative Black Caucus comprises African American legislators who work collaboratively to address issues pertinent to Black communities in Iowa. Members include individuals such as Ako Abdul-Samad, Ruth Ann Gaines, and Izaah Knox, among others. The caucus focuses on policies related to social justice, education, and economic development.

These legislators have played pivotal roles in shaping Iowa's legislative priorities and continue to advocate for inclusive policies that benefit all Iowans.
