Why This Film Matters

Just as IMMAWII has done in the past—most notably with our 2024 community screening of The Little Mermaid—we are intentional about selecting films that uplift, affirm, and reflect Black families in their full humanity.

Too often, African Americans are portrayed through deficit-based or negative narratives in mainstream media. Paw Paw & Dayja offers something beautifully different: a tender, humorous, and heartfelt story centered on the loving bond between a grandfather and his granddaughter.

“Paw Paw” is a term of endearment for grandpa, and this film embodies exactly what that name represents—wisdom, patience, protection, and unconditional love. It is a story families can enjoy together, sparking conversation across generations.

Spotlight on Iowa Filmmakers

The Event will also feature a short documentary by StevenTorriano Berry, highlighting a powerful moment in Iowa history:  Several African American organizations coming together to successfully place a National Historic Marker at the Fort Des Moines Museum and Educational Center.  This documentary showcases what is possible when community collaborates with purpose—honoring Black history, preserving legacy, and achieving a shared vision.

In addition to our featured films, the Mini Film Fest will uplift young and emerging Iowa filmmakers, giving space to new voices, fresh perspectives, and the next generation of storytellers.
