J.B. Morris was a trailblazer, a community leader, and a man whose dedication to justice and education helped shape the future of Iowa. Born in the late 1800s, Morris grew up during a time when opportunities for Black Americans were limited, especially in the Midwest. But he believed in the power of education and the importance of standing up for what is right.
Morris became a lawyer, one of the first Black attorneys in the state of Iowa. His work focused on civil rights and equal treatment under the law. At a time when racial discrimination was common, he used his voice and his legal skills to fight for fairness in housing, jobs, and schools. He also helped lead the Des Moines chapter of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), working alongside others to end segregation and promote racial equality.
But Morris’s influence didn’t stop there. He believed strongly in giving back to the community and was a passionate advocate for education. He encouraged young people to study hard, believe in themselves, and use their talents to create a better world. His actions and words inspired many in the Des Moines area and across Iowa.
To honor his contributions, the community named a school after him—J.B. Morris Elementary School. This school stands not just as a place for learning, but as a symbol of courage, leadership, and hope. It reminds students every day that one person can make a difference and that education is a powerful tool for change.
J.B. Morris’s life is a part of Iowa’s rich Black history, and his legacy continues to shine in the lives of students and families who walk through the doors of the school that bears his name.
